Critical Roles

Graphic design is often used to portray a strong message or

opinion such as properganda, political and ethical campaigns.

In this brief we were given a news arlicle with which we had to

form an opinon or take a stance and reflect it in a peice of

graphic design.

The news article I had to reflect on was the Prince Harry ‘Paki

scandal’ with which I explored many aspects of racism and

equality campaigning. However my final piece became more

of a critisism of how the media twist and exaggerate minor

storys to manipulate readers views.

Taking 4 major front page headlines, and censoring them so

that only key descriptive words were left visible highlighted

the medias clever use of repeated words and descriptions

for an over dramatic effect.

Hybrid In Print

When given the theme of hybrids i decided to explore it through

printed techniques. Researching the wide topic of hybrids i

decided to focus on hybrid mythological creatures.

During the length of the project i attempted many different

printing techniques including a range of etchings, lino prints

and photographic eatching and really enjoyed the effect that

they producted.

Sense Of Place

For the sense of place project we had to gather and record as

much visual information from a specific location as possible,

including taking pictures drawings and collecting ephemera.

After all visual research had been collected our brief was to

product a piece of graphics which portrayed that sense of

place by adopting its styles and attributes.

My location i researched was the south bank district of london,

and within my piece focused on the aspects for which southbank

is known including the arts specifically graffiti, skater culture and

music.

My final outcome became a screen printed collage, as i felt the

medium was very appropriate to the location and gave a great

sense of place.

Grid Systems

As a graphic designer I know that the grid is an important structural

guide within all aspects of design. By using the UCA campus as

inspiration we had to find a grid system and use it as the foundations

for a piece of design work.

When studying the structure of the UCA building I noticed that it was

made up for many different grid systems. This inspired me to produce

a series of postcards for the UCA using the grid systems from different

structural aspects of the building to advertise the college and the

graphic design course.

The postcards I designed also had an interactive element where each

architectural aspect could be slotted together to form a three

dimensional structure.

Menu Magazine

The brief for this project was to design a magazine with a given tone

and theme. I recieved the tone ‘loud’ and the theme of ‘restaurants’

and persued an investigation into loud aspects of resturants including

noise level, loud design, boldness in food and vibrancy in atmosphere.

My final outcome was a magazine called MENU which guided you

through a loud resturant experience, placing emphasis on bold and

bright design throughout.

Magazine Design

As a two week introduction to a magazine project, we were given a

number of random objects as well as text and image to create a

visually interesting piece with the strict guidelines of it being an

A4, 8 page magazine.

The material i had to work with included plastic cups, the cover

image from the book Atonement, an interview, a dull landscape

image and the letter A from a printing press.

As a graphic designers role is to make information visually

interesting, this task really tested the skills of arrangment

and styling to produce a coherant and asthetically pleasing

peice out of found objects.
